Is 25Mbps Enough ?

News from the UK that BT has decided to base the rollout of its fibre, C21 network, currently under trial near Cardiff, to 25Mbps. Many naysayers have claimed that this will not work for a home with two HD screens.

I disagree. As I've stated in previous posts, I believe 4 - 6Mbps will provide an excellent, HD like experience, so this is a good call by BT, IMHO. Especially considering that encoders, decoders and codecs keep on improving.

What I'm more worried about is the contention issue which is beginning to bedevil all us broadband users as viewing high quality video over the internet becomes more and more popular.

I have Verizon FiOS in the states at 20Mb/s and it is more than enough. I can pull down an hour of H264 720p in about 8 minutes. My 5Mb/s is even more than enough to serve it up to somebody else if need be.
