Eye In The Sky

Over the coming years, satellite will have a natural advantage over cable for the simple reason that it is capable of delivering more capacity and can therefore better cope with the move to HD.

The solution for the cablecos is to fight back with their natural advantage - their backchannel.

This would seem to indicate that we can expect some differences to appear in the way these companies provide services. Cablecos will need to become more like IPTV providers, where content is switched at the server instead of on the local TV and will be able to use the backchannel for P2P type technologies and for user generated content.

But at the moment HD is the high ground and this has resulted in litigation over advertising claims in the US.
