The Eyes Have It

The news is a trickle, but its significance is considerable. Samsung, erstwhile maker of flat screens and mobile phones has joined the list of hardware manufacturers who are now actively licensing content.

These announcements show a small but significant power shift that should be most alarming to current network operators.

In a world where set top boxes are no longer required, where a screen we used to call a TV can be plugged directly into the internet and then controlled by a mobile phone, the company that controls the user controls the revenue opportunities.

Of course, this does not mean that this disintermediation will be successful, but we are seeing the beginning of the next era of development for TV.
