Abracadabra Shazam!

I remember encountering Shazam sometime in the early naughties. They’d already been around for a while (I’ve read their setup date as variously 1999 and 2004 in the mainstream media, who still don’t seem able to check a fact but will itherwise provide opinions on anything and everything).
But who cares? The reality is that they are a British company with genuinely bleeding edge technology with little commercial application that has swallowed up tens if not hundreds of millions of funding over 15 years or more and have now exited at a valuation that would make a US startup laugh and which has probably washed out all but the most recent investors.
A British company selling itself for $400m to Apple might seem like a massive result. The reality is that this was a score draw...

Time For Us To Own Our Data - And Trade It

The cat and mouse game between Big Internet and Big Government over who tracks you more is probably a neverending saga.

Big Government is peeved that Big Internet is generally better at these things due to better engagement (big clue to Government about what they should do, duh! How about running networks for the communities and societies you govern!)

And the introduction of GDPR legislation in the EU has just resulted in ever more riddiculous 'I agree' popups with no real increased protection of personal privacy or data. It's just an inconvenient addition to a stupid game.

Let's reverse that.

If a browser, website or app wants my data, they have to obtain it from mybot - my own data bank. If they want it for free, they should tell me why. If they want to bid for it, so be it.

Why Is BBC News So Bad ?

Rolling news is one thing, but watching BBC news is just dejavu. Day after day, they run the same news stories, morning, noon and night, and often from one day to the next. This could be fine for an impoverished local news channel, but why can't the BBC get with the developing story ?
BBC coverage of the Japanese crisis has been laughable next to ITV, who managed to get correspondents to the front line.
Of course, despots around the world see them as a grave enemy, so this does not help, but watching evening news one day and seeing the same reports recycled through breakfast news, lunchtime news and the following day's evening news is depressing.
And realising that, although we pay hundreds of millions to this organisation, almost all of the pictures we see come from local agencies, AFP or AP is depressing. All we get from the BBC are camera phone images from a hundred miles away from the action.
