BT and Entriq have teamed up to offer a commercial download service under the BT Vision brand.
Entriq have been around forever and have suddenly found themselves sitting in the right place at the right time.
Paid for media downloads may appear to be a pretty straightforward technology, but this is far from the reality. It is a horribly complex application to get right.
The download market will be very important in the era before the ubiquitous availability of bandwidth - when you have 10Mbps on your mobile phone anywhere in the world then having a file sitting on that mobile will be less important, but in the interim there are serious commercial models to be built here, as Apple provied with their audio iTunes service.
However, it's far from a crock of gold and the major opportunity probably exists for a hardware/software combination like the iPod/iTunes model and this is clearly where Microsoft are heading with their rumoured handheld video and audio player, Zune.
