Peer Problems

The P2P industry is taking a beating in Washington as the Higher Education Reauthorization Act almost managed to achieve a ban on P2P use in educational establishments (it was amended at the eleventh hour but there are further assaults). There is real paranoia over the backdoor opened by P2P systems as well as the issue of copyright infringement and soon as anything becomes an issue of national security in the US these days it's game over.

I've blogged before about how I dislike Joost, in particular, thanks to the way it sucks the life out of your PC and internet connection even when you're not using it. P2P may be viable for download services unless it's legislated against, but I remain cynical about its utility for streaming services.
