The set top box has reached its peak and is set to decline as more and more functionality gets built into TV screens. Panasonic is now actively advertising its Viera Cast technology with a HD recorder that also enables users to view YouTube clips on their telly.
They are not alone, with Samsung, LG, Philips and Sony all beginning to implement content-orientated strategies.
The interesting development in this area will be to see the alliances that develop. The most successful aggregator of quality content, Hulu, has been reticent to date about doing any deals that might undermine their parent companies' interests.
