As predicted on this blog some weeks ago, Narrowstep's major competitor, theplatform, has been purchased by Comcast for a reported $70 - $80m.

I was going to use the term 'lemmings' but the United Order of Lemmings have written to me and asked me to stop giving them a bad name. How did ITV get Friends Reunited and ITV Local so wrong ? And where did NewsCorp managed to get MySpace from 100m to 5m users - and why are they now seeming to do the same with The Times online sites? Yet, with video they have leveraged this positions well and become dominant in the provision of online video in the US and the UK. In the US no major TV company has tried to stray beyond what they do, and at the same time they've come up with concepts such as Hulu . Collaborative ventures like this have critical mass in the US, but seem futile in the UK where only the BBC count. No TV Sex Please, We're Married!

My regular correspondent and former colleague Pete has sent me this link , which is priceless. Clearly, there's scope for a married sex channel in there somewhere... But in the middle of this nonsense somewhere is the realisation that a generation of kids are growing up with ready access to sexual content; the effect of this is hard to predict. Holland, a country with perhaps the most liberal attitude in the world to sex, has one of the lowest rates of teenage pregnancy and also, reportedly, low rates of promiscuity. Television, from its inception has been closely regulated and controlled in accordance to changing mores, but the internet has no such controls.

The Last Post

So this is it. After two decades I am closing down IPTV Times. The last post was Murder on 5th: the last breath of democracy in the US. It will fade in the rear view mirror. Barely anyone will see it go or mourn its passing. The world of online TV remains a fascinating space, but not one for me. I did my time over thirty years and had successes and failures. As with most people in everything they do, mostly failures. The blog will remain as a testament and archive to a time and a place and an evolution. Follow my new adventures at Kwedl Sparks .
