Left Of Field

A new free newspaper war has broken out in London as Murdoch's News International prepares to launch a freebie, thelondonpaper in competition to Associated Newspapers' London Lite and Metro.

Putting to one side the irony that launching an online TV station or, at least, web portal for the city would cost a lot less and be less risky, I have a sneaking suspicion that the narrowcasting effect is catching on.

All of this may seem left of field, but internet TV channels do not operate in isolation and most major media owners depend on cross promotion to move between one medium and another.

London, where Associated's This Is London is the most successful web portal, may be about to become the new battleground for localised audiences.
