I was meeting with Ken Belson, a business correspondent on the NY Times at their midtown offices the morning the eBay - Skype deal was announced. We tried to work out the logic and concluded that there were three reasons for the acquisition: 1) to stop anyone else from buying Skype; 2) Skype offered one of the few businesses with the potential for the kind of margins eBay shareholders had grown used to and 3) to move into the services market.
It seems that 3) has come to pass according to reports today. So, Joost, the ultimate face-to-face video selling service ? Perhaps not...
