The Year Of The Box

It seems that a slew of specialist IPTV set top boxes are on their way to the market as more and more entrants seek a triple play to challenge existing telcos and TV services.

In Europe, everyone from financial institutions to logistics companies are looking to launch their own services, whilst in the US, Netflix has announced that it is to launch a STB service in association with hardware manufacturer, LG, to complement its existing PC based video download/streaming service. The service will be included in the existing subscriber price, but I've heard reports that a PC will be required to order movies, which seems to defeat the purpose of the service somewhat.

Also, initially only 6,000 titles will be available, compared to over 60,000 on the usual mail-based service.

Still this is a significant move and expect a plethora of boxes offering a wide variety of services in 2008.
