It was sad to hear of the passing away of the screenwriter of my favourite film, Last Year In Mariendbad, Alain Robbe-Grillet . He was a highly original film-maker and novelist in his own right and embodied the Cahiers de Cinema era in France which at once challenged and embraced the dominant Hollywood industry.
