Microsoft Is Now Irrelevant

OK, this is going to be one of those non-postings that annoy me elsewhere, but, frankly, I can't be bothered.

I had a late night out with former colleagues and was in a cab passing the PC World on Tottenham Court Road in London at 11.30 pm the other night. Outside the store were eighty or so people queueing.

My befuddled mind worked out that the store was opening at midnight to sell Windows 7 - a sad marketing conceit even in Harry Potter days. But this product, what does it do ?

I have read and read and found that it does absolutely nothing new as far as I can tell. All it is is a patch - a version that works better.

Reviews have been positive, but I'm totally perplexed. In an age where so much could have been done to, for example, re-invent the appalling Media Center software, nothing has been done.

Now, I haven't used this software, and have no intention in wasting my time in replacing my various Vista and XP PCs which all seem to work pretty well, but you increasingly have to ask: is Microsoft irrelevant ?
