TVCatchup Loses First Round

Another blow for the incumbents as TVCatchup is ruled against in its interpretation of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988. It looks likely that it will now lose the case brought against it by UK channels ITV, Channel 4 and Five. There are more details in this report.

It's rather depressing that TVCatchup is the only way I can watch television on my iPad and that the incumbents spend more time in protecting their patch rather than providing the service their viewers want. But of course, with YouView on the horizon, this is hardly surprising.

This morning I was able to connect to Channel 4 (which is, after all, a public service broadcaster), but not to ITV or Five.

Since my iPad has replaced my second television, I guess it's time to either stop watching these channels or buy another receiver. It's a thin line between preserving copyright and meeting viewer expectations in the era of tv everywhere.
